How to read a RC passage
SKIMMING AND SCANNING
SKIMMING: GETTING AN IDEA OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE PASSAGE: We recommend using the following approach: at the end of each paragraph, pause and ask yourself why the author included it: in writing this paragraph, is the author describing a theory? Is he providing examples on that theory? Is he questioning a finding? etc. Focus on the bigger picture by identifying the purpose of each paragraph and how it connects to the ones that came before it: in the following chapter is the author elaborating on the topic? Is he presenting an agreeing idea or is he countering it?
If you clearly understand why every paragraph is there and how all the paragraphs work together, you’ll be well prepared to answer the questions that are likely to follow.
So, you can break down the passage into some bullets points; after reading each chapter, ask yourself, what have I just read? The answer can be, as mentioned earlier: the author presenting a theory, the author presenting evidence, the author providing examples and so on, so try to get the grasp of what’s happening in the paragraphs itself.
DON’T OBSESS OVER DETAIL:
You don’t need to understand every single detail or know the meaning of every word. What matters most is grasping the overall picture: what the author is trying to say, how the ideas develop throughout the passage, and why each paragraph is included. Focusing on the general structure and purpose of the text will help you understand it more effectively than getting stuck on individual details. Our focus is, first of all, skimming the text and getting clear what’s going on in the passage! After getting the bigger picture and organizing our bullet points, you can read the question to be answered and scan the text.
SCANNING
Once you understand the general meaning and structure of a text, you know where different pieces of information are located and why. You can then answer questions going straight to the part of the text where the answer is likely to be and find it quickly. Now we are scanning the test, and it’s time you focus on details and little nuances.
