Selecting the right business school is often one of the most important decisions in the MBA application process because it shapes not only where you study, but also the opportunities and network you build for your future career.
Here is our guidance based on our first-hand MBA experience in the US + years of experience as an admissions consultant.
1.🌎 Geography: Start with broader geography to narrow down your choices. Where do you want to study and work after your MBA? The work culture, career opportunities, immigration policies, and lifestyles vary significantly across the US, Europe, and Asia. So think about what kind of life you want after your MBA and decide accordingly.
2. ⏳️Duration: The most common MBA format is a 2-year program. But that might not be apt for everyone. So, research accelerated 10-month, 12-month, and 15-month options and see if those are better fit for you. For experiences professionals EMBA or Part-Time MBA options are also available.
3. 👔Career goals: While most MBA programs are general management, broad-based programs, you should look at electives offered, experiential learning opportunities, global projects, and industry-specific resources. Also check the employment reports of each school to ensure your target companies recruit at your chosen schools.
4. 👨💼👩💼Class profile: Review details of the admitted class to evaluate if your profile matches what they are looking for. For example, your age, work experience should ideally match school's average. And your test scores should be ideally better than the school's average to give you a decent shot at admission.
5. 🌇Location: This is different from geography. This is about city vs small town experience. A school located in a big city, think NYC, Chicago, or London will give you a very different experience compared to one located in a smaller city/town like Ann Arbor, Ithaca, or Oxford. City offers multitude of cultural, social, and networking opportunities. Town offers more quiet, slow-paced life, close-knit community and a low-cost of living.
6. 💰Scholarships: If financial aid matters to you, then you'll have to factor in the likelihood of you getting scholarships from particular schools - based on how impressive, and superior, your profile is compared to that school's average class profile. Merit scholarships are usually awarded based on academic and professional performance.
7. 🥇Rankings: Finally, you can use B-schools rankings as a guide to categorize your list in dream, target and safety schools - based on your chances of admission.
To manage risks and achieve successful admission and scholarship, we recommend a well-balanced school list that typically includes 5–8 programs that align with your career goals, personal aspirations, and admission chances.
