Hi everyone - I am writing because I am devastated at the moment. I have prepared for the GMAT for the past three months. Beginning of January, I did my first official practice test and scored a 630 (V38, Q38) which I thought for only a month of very light study, this was a reasonable result and a good baseline. Last week, I did the second practice exam and was delighted - I scored a 710 (V41, Q48) and considered booking the GMAT Online basically for the next day. In the end, I decided to wait for another two weeks to get one or two points more in either Quant or Verbal. So today, I did another official practice test and was shocked: I scored a 630 again, this time with V42 (so improvement of one point) and... Q32. 17th percentile.

I genuinely don't get it. Especially because in my 710/Q48 test, I got 11 questions incorrect while in my 630/Q32 I got 10 questions incorrect - one less! I get that the number of questions that you answer correctly is not what matters, but still. A 16 point difference even though I answered one more question correctly?

The only possible explanation that I can think of is how the questions that I got wrong are distributed - for some reason (maybe I wasn't yet fully concentrated? I don't know), there was a streak of wrong questions right in the beginning. After that streak, I only got a couple of questions wrong. In my 710 test - I checked - the wrong answers were much more dispersed.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi gmattaker1202,

For scoring 700 and above, you need to get the easy medium questions right as GMAT test is adaptive in nature. You can afford making mistakes only in the latter half of the Section, not in the beginning. You have to make the GMAT algorithm serve you difficult questions and get them right. For that, being conceptually clear on all topics is really vital. Not only this, you have to be good with application of concepts because GMAT is a test of application of concepts.

We do not recommend to spend a lot of time on the first 10 question but yes first 10 questions do matter, so getting them right is important as it sets the tone of the algorithm. In your case, as you mentioned you got a streak of questions wrong in the very beginning, your chances of scoring 700+ reduced to a bare minimum in spite of getting only a couple of questions wrong in the later half.

Here's an article that will help you understand why just Accuracy isn't the king:
Accuracy vs Ability: Their Importance on the GMAT

Hi gmattaker1202,

The scoring Algorithm for the Official GMAT is more complicated than most people realize - and it takes into account far more than just the number of correct and incorrect answers. There is some fairly straight-forward analysis of this recent CAT that you can do though (that can help to define why your Quant Scaled Score was lower) - and we'll start with an easy question to answer: how many questions did you get wrong in that section that you could (or should) have gotten correct)? Although you did not explicitly state it in your prior posts, you implied that your Score Goal was a 740+. To earn that type of Score, you cannot afford to get questions wrong because of silly/little mistakes.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

1) Did you really not take any other CATs/mocks in the 2 months between your 630 and 710? If there were any others, then on what dates did you take those CATs and how did you score on each?
2) Is your current Score Goal 740 or is it something else?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
