Hughes uses 75% of his backyard area for gardening. He plants three types of flowers – Roses, Tulips and Lilies. He uses 30% of the gardening area to plant roses and 20% of the gardening area to plant tulips. If he uses the remaining 30 acres of the gardening area to plant Lilies, then how many acres of the whole backyard was not used for gardening?

A) 20
B) 30
C) 40
D) 60
E) 80

Solution

    • Let the total area of Hughes backyard be \(x \)acres.
    • So, area used for gardening \(= 0.75*x\)
    • Now, 30% area of the gardening area is used for planting roses and 20% of gardening area is used for planting tulips.
      o Hence, Area used for planting lilies \(= (1-0.3-0.2) *0.75x = 30\)
         Or, \(0.5*0.75x = 30\)
         Or, \(x = \frac{30}{0.75*0.5} = 80\) acres.
    • Thus, area of the backyard which is not used for gardening \(= (1 -0.75) *x = 0.25*x = 80*0.25=20\) acres.
Thus, the correct answer is Option A.
