Hughes uses 75% of his backyard area for gardening. He plants three types of flowers – Roses, Tulips and Lilies. Let gardening area be 100% ( NOT backyard area ) of which 50% has been used by Roses and Tulips. Remaining 50% of the Gardening area = 30 acres . So if 50% = 30 acres then 100% = 60 acres. Hence total gardening area is 60 Acres . Now this 60 acres is only 75% of whole backyard. So if 75% = 60 acres then 100% = 80 acres . So total backyard area = 80 acres of which only 60 acres ( 75%) has been used. Hence 20 acres of whole backyard was not used for gardening.

50 % of the gardening area is occupied by roses and tulips, thus the remaining 50% is occupied by lilies, which accounts for 30 acres. Having this main idea in mind, it is possible to calculate how many acres are still not gardened (= 25% of total acres).
50% of 75% = 30;
25% not occupied by gardening = x acres;
(25/100) * 30 = x * (50/100 * 75/100) ==> x = 20%
Correct answer: A
