Explanation

Meaning of the sentence: The sentence intends to compare the attention spans of humans to the attention span of a goldfish. Attention spans are quantities.

Lesser implies of a lower quality, rank or degree and is not a correct comparative word to imply smaller in amount. Less and shorter can both be used to imply comparison in this context. Further, the correct comparison is between the attention spans of humans and the attention span of the goldfish and not the goldfish itself.

aragonn, I get that the comparison is supposed to be between attention spans. But how can "that", a singular pronoun, refer to "attention spans"? Shouldn't it be those?

For such kind of doubts, always refer for non underline part.

we(one human can't be we) now have attention spans (multiple human can't have 1 attention spans). attention spans of these humans vs that of goldfish. Gold fish can have only 1 .Hope it clarifies.
