Assist in is the correct idiom...
A and D is out....
B has an akward this, which has no clear referent... + has an ending those of which again has no referent...
C uses which and becomes a bad sentence... courtship assists flies...
E should be correct

Could you plz explain more on this:
E)apparently assisting flies that taste the hyrdocarbons on prospective mates in distinguishing their own species from
distinguishing X from Y
I suppose X and Y need to be ||.
Here X = their own species
Y= others
Shouldn't Y be 'those of others'
