Hypothetical Situation...

Question

I know a lot of us dont care about rankings and that we look for fit in a school and all that ... BUT

If every school had a ED and that as soon as you get an admit, you withdraw all your other apps, what would be the lowest ranked school that you guys would go to?

If you could apply to one and only one school, then where would you apply, keeping in mind that you want to increase your chances of getting selected, but do not want to go to a school that you'd not love. So, you want to follow your dream, but still be a little realistic with your chances.

Assumption: All applicants are ethical and that you get admitted to your lowest ranked school

ps. Your assumption that you'd get admitted in your lowest ranked school kinda makes the question useless. Maybe you want to rephrase your question this way: "If you could apply to one and only one school, then where would you apply, keeping in mind that you want to increase your chances of getting selected, but do not want to go to a school that you'd not love. So, you want to follow your dream, but still be a little realistic with your chances."

I never got why people apply to 6 schools, get accepted to 2 but then dont go. Instead they reapply the next year. I am of the mind, if I wouldn't happily go then why waste all the time and money to apply.

Alright, since I was the guy who started it, I would say it would have to be Duke for me. I agree with River, that I would not apply to a school that I would not be attending if admitted. If I am lucky to get into Dook, I would be more than glad to be a Blue Devil

(though would not root for their basketball team)

I really only have two schools that I am applying to for R1 and I would pick Emory over Duke if I got into both. If I get into neither school, Geogia Tech is my backup, because I'm already located in Atlanta, but I won't apply until R2 if I don't get into either of my top choices.

Where your question asks, what school would you apply to with one shot, he merely asks what's the lowest ranked school that would be acceptable to you.

As for me, I wouldn't go outside of the elite cluster.

well I think the essence of the question is the same thing. You could frame it in a few different ways but I think the answer for most people would be the same (I think). IF someone has different answers for the two questions, please post.

Yea, the idea of the questions is close. But theoretically, here goes:
If I ranked the schools that I wanted to attend from 1-10, with one application, I would probably apply to the school ranked around 7-8. But I would still go to the school ranked 10th.

Yeah. Not the same question. But note that dosa_don said that every school has an "ED" round and you have to withdraw from all other applications once you get admitted. If he just wanted to say "What is the lowest ranked school that you would go to," then the point about "ED" round was kinda moot. That is why I felt that what he wanted to say was something like what I posted. Anyway, for me, that "one-shot" school was Columbia. :roll:

Now that I already know Col's result, I would say that my "one-shot" school is Wharton. Easy for me to say 'cos I've only researched two schools in great details so far.

I'm currently of the "go huge or go home" mindset, but that may change in the next year...I'm applying in fall 2008.
