Hi Neha, since you are new to GMAT, this video would quickly bring you up to speed with the format, the best practices, and the time requirements for GMAT preparation.

Self-prep is most definitely an option.

Good luck!

If you're new to the GMAT, consider taking an official mock from the MBA website after getting a bit familiar with the material. Could help give a sense how close/far you are to your target score and how you currently perform on the individual sections. The Share GMAT Experience subforum could also provide some helpful insight (i.e. how long/likely different score jumps may be).

I am new to GMAT prep, so I have few questions in mind. It would be quite helpful if anyone can answer the following.
1. How many months should I target to prepare? I do not want to drag it for a long time.
2. Is it essential to take coaching or can it be self prepared?
3. are there any scope to purchase course for one of the sections or mocks alone?

I'm happy to answer your first two questions:

1. How many months should I target to prepare? I do not want to drag it for a long time.

It honestly depends on your score goal and your baseline score. A good way to move forward is to take a full-length practice exam so you can see how far off you are from your score goal. Here is some more information:

How Many Hours Should I Study for the GMAT Focus?

2. Is it essential to take coaching or can it be self prepared?

Many students do use courses. When it comes to test prep resources, it’s important to find the one that best suits your learning style.
