I just read a sentence in Manhattan SC guide which is as follows:
"The band U2 WAS just one of many new groups on the rock music scene in the early 1980's, but less than ten years later, U2 HAD fully ECLIPSED its early rivals in the pantheon of popular music. "
Could anyone please explain the use of HAD in the sentence above. Is HAD used as a verb here OR Is HAD used to signify a Past Perfect tense?
If it is latter, then how is the use of HAD justified? (Past Perfect = HAD + Past Participle)
Thanking in anticipation!
PS: Test takers, please buy the latest Manhattan SC Guide well in advance before taking your GMAT. The book is awesome! There are a few SC Advanced chapters, an SC question bank on Manhattan site and 6 free tests. Totally, worth the cost.
Since, the post didn't allow me to submit this qn without selecting an official answer radio button, m just clicking an irrelevant reply because the sentence mentioned above is correct!

imania, If it is past perfect then HAD should rather come in lace of WAS (in bold) because U2 eclipsed after early 1980's. "The band U2 WAS just one of many new groups on the rock music scene in the early 1980's, but less than ten years later, U2 HAD fully ECLIPSED its early rivals in the pantheon of popular music. "
This is a very similar situation and on the thread some GMAT instructors have given their opinion. Here the event has occurred before 10 years are past. Hence it is PAST PERFECT.
