I'm considering the Kaplan Program, please list your Exper.

Question

I'm new to the GMAT exam, considering taking the Kaplan Live or Manhattan Gmat Self or Live, can anyone list their experiences with the Kaplan program, Pro's and Con's.

Ideally I'm looking for a program that can help me achieve 700+.

I'm Eli, a Kaplan teacher, and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the Kaplan program!

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for or where you're starting from, but I can reassure you that Kaplan can help you hit a 700. Kaplan offers a separate Advance classroom course for higher-scoring students, to make sure that every Kaplan student gets an experience personalized to him or her. And I know that it works--just yesterday, I got a phone call from a former student thanking me for Kaplan's help in earning him a 770 on his test day!

I'm completely new, fresh as it gets.... does your program cover all the basics of math in the program. It's been quite a few years of math, and I'm reluctant to purchase a program that won't technically teach me on how to solve. I heard that the Kaplan has strategies on how to solve, rather than teach to solve. Like Strategized guessing, which I have no problem with,but I think I need to know the concept and how to solve as well.

My goal is 680+, under like 3 months.

Hi Laythesmack,

Kaplan does teach all the math you'll need to know. Kaplan values math strategies, because many GMAT problems can be solved by the backdoor and it would be foolish to be too prideful to take advantage of this fact. However, there are a lot of problems that are not solvable without an understanding of the underlying math concepts, and we wouldn't be much of a test prep company if we didn't prepare you for those as well! The four dedicated math sessions of Kaplan's GMAT course teach algebra, arithmetic, number properties, math formulas, geometry, proportions, and statistics.

Of course, although math is a challenging subject for most GMAT test-takers, the majority of them remember the basics of solving for X or finding the median of a list. If you're far enough out of school that even those fundamentals are a distant memory, you might find our Math Refresher to be just what you need to recollect those old techniques. Adding the Math Refresher onto a Kaplan course is an additional fee, but the four full-length teaching sessions also come with two hours of tutoring with your Kaplan instructor, so it almost pays for itself.

So how much does the 4 math courses cost, do I get a discount if I purchase them seperately to the course? I took my math my freshmen year, and frankly I have not seen a mathbook since then. I struggled then, and frankly, I could use the reminder.

So If i were to do a self-prep course, how much time would they take, and how much practice do I get out of it? I plan to take on the gmat in 3 months, so I don't know more or less how long these other courses will set me back?

the Math Refresher is $499 by itself, but only $299 when purchased with our course.

For self study, there are two options. The first is Kaplan Premier, available through Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Borders, and other major book chains. This book contains all the Kaplan methods, practice sets, all the math and grammar you'll need to take the test, and a CD with 5 full length CATs. It's a great resource for people who want to prep quickly on their own, and can learn from a book.

However, some people need the guidance of a Kaplan teacher, have trouble learning directly from text, or simply want to do more practice than the Premier book offers. For those students, self-study through Kaplan's Premium Online program is available. The Premium Online program gets you all of the online tests, workshops, and Lessons On Demand available to our regular GMAT classroom students--in short, you get everything but the Kaplan teacher. It's an excellent study option for self-motivated studiers who want to spend a lot of time working on a lot of subjects.

Hi,

I'm planning to take GMAT for international students course at Kaplan in Chicago. I don't understand how it is different with online GMAT course at Kaplan (which is much cheaper). Is it same Kaplan institution? I just have to take this course because I have to stay in my F-1 Visa. Anyone has experience studying this course? is it any good?

Our international programs are handled by a different division of the company, Kaplan International Colleges, although the materials are similar and the website is identical. The IGMAT course is substantially longer for two reasons--one is to qualify for a student visa, and the other is to allow students still mastering the English language to spend extra time on the Verbal section. Does this sound like a good fit for you?
