How are you?
I took GMAT test 3 months ago with little or almost no preparation with a modest target of 600 in mind. I wrote GMAT prep 1, 2 days before I took real GMAT and scored 580 in that. Two days later in real test I scored 590 (Q38 V34).
I soon realized that it is not that difficult for me to cross 650 mark if I prepare a bit and decided to write GMAT with some preparation and target good business schools. So with this renewed high aim I have been preparing for past 2 months part time. During this period I used OG Ed12, MGMAT(all 8 books) for my practice.
Last week I wrote GMAT prep 1 again after 3 months thinking that I wont remember any of the questions(rather answers) and I was right. I scored 690(Q49 V35) on that practice test. I thought this indicates that my preparation is on course. But yesterday I had a shocking experience when I took GMAT prep 2 (for the first time ever) and saw a score of 590! (Q45 V26) I do not know what went wrong with my verbal! I had scored decent numbers with MGMAT verbal (V34,V35). I need some help to analyze what might have gone wrong in yesterday's prep test 2.
I compared GMAT prep1 verbal with GMAT prep2's and the number of SC, CR and RC questions I got right are the same. The level of questions which I got right was apparently the same, if you ask me.
I have no idea where I screwed up. Can someone please help me make sense of this mess?
I desperately need to know where I stand right now and what I am capable of scoring at real GMAT if I take it now.

First off -- don't fear! If you're confident in your abilities, then you'll do just fine.
I would caution you about putting much weight in a retaken test. While you may not consciously remember the questions perfectly, your brain may remember little bits here and there. You'll also be much more comfortable and relaxed when retaking an exam.
That being said -- a 100 point drop is pretty extreme. I'm betting you're in the 600 level, not 500 level.
You said that you've used the MGMAT books. Have you taken the MGMAT tests (there are 6)? The MGMAT scores are usually fairly representative, and they give a great analysis of every question.

as YourDreamTheater said, 100-point drop is pretty extreme. Something must have gone wrong. I, too, think you should be at least in the 600-level. Did you focus just as much when you were taking GMATPrep 2? Granted that you got a 690 when you finished GMATPrep 1, you may have lost some focus thinking that it's a piece of cake. Basically what I'm trying to say is that treat every CAT you take (including the real deal, of course) as the real deal. Perhaps you were doing that; or perhaps you weren't. I'd just like to point it out just in case you weren't treating it as the real one. Also, it's pretty hard for one to judge if the level of the questions were the same. There are algorithms in the system and the questions that determine the level of a question that no regular test-taker will be able to figure out. The place where you miss the question is also crucial. Taken everything into consideration, even if you missed the same number of questions, you may still have gotten a lower score (however, 100-point is a bit extreme...)
