I need help with function.

Question

First of all, i don't understand what is the question asking. Can someone please teach me on how to do it?

A function f:{1, 2, 3, 4, 5} → {0, 1, 2, 3, 4} is defined by the rule: f(n) is the remainder after
3n is divided by 5.

(a) Draw an arrow diagram for this function. 
(b) State whether ? is one-to-one and whether ? is onto.

Hi will8989,

This is certainly not a GMAT type question and there are certain things missing.
You will not be asked to draw a diagram on the GMAT.

As for the function,
{1, 2, 3, 4, 5} → {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}.
This means that

f(1) = 0
f(2) = 1
f(3) = 2
f(4) = 3
f(5) =4

This means f(x) = x - 1 is the function.

Now you should be able to draw the graph and find the mapping.

Types of functions (onto, one-to-one etc) are not tested on GMAT. All you need to know is what are functions and you should be able to handle basic operations on functions. Check out these posts.
