I read somewhere that only very basic probability / permutation-combination questions appear on the GMAT. Is this true ?

You may get probably 1-2 questions. But it all depends on you are doing on your test . If you are doing well they may throw up 1-2 probablity questions .
I dont even attempt probablity question unless it us very simple.

I've heard from people that have scored high that they didn't even encounter a single perm-comb problem and others who scored sub par and have gotten at least one. Depends on your luck of the draw I guess. But nevertheless, you should prepare for that section - you never know what they will throw at you...
