If anyone is interested in an example of a GMAT score with absolutely no preparation, please read on. I had procrastinated way too long for GMAT studying and a medical emergency meant that I missed the 7-day rescheduling deadline. As such, I decided to sit the exam anyways to not waste the $250 fee as I wanted a feel of what writing the GMAT is like. As well, the recent change in the GMAT score cancellation policy meant that there was absolutely no potential blowback for getting a low score. To preface, I had ordered two series of GMAT prep books off Amazon but I hadn't taken the time to review anything past the section that introduces what the GMAT exam was.
Now, this isn't the first time that I've sat a standardized test without preparation. I had also sat my first SAT without any prep after deciding that I didn't want to go to the US for university. On that instance, I believe I scored somewhere around 1850/2400 - so let's say 80-85th percentile (although I didvery poorly on the essay). As well, I took a standardized test offered by a well-known professional organization in a business field of study and scored in the top 10 worldwide without any prep. Other relevant parts of my background are that I am a native English speaker and that I graduated in a non-quantitative intensive field of business (although I did get an A+ in Calculus 1 and 2 a few years ago). As stated before, I did not review any GMAT materials at all except for some information regarding the structure of the AWA essay (as I didn't want to fail it completely if I actually managed a 720+). The day before the exam, I took a short GMAT evaluation test and somehow got an estimated score of about 740. Anyways, here were my results (the percentiles may be ever so slightly off):
Overall: 690
Quant: 64th Percentile
Verbal: 88th Percentile
IR: 8
In the end, I finished the quant section with only about 5 minutes remaining. The verbal section was much faster and I finished 25 minutes early. I guess I can be somewhat proud of myself as the score is much higher than that of two journalists with articles on doing the GMAT without prep, (640 for the Bloomberg one and 360 for the Globe and Mail one). Not studying obviously killed my quant score as I'm sure I could've gotten at least the 80th percentile if I had reviewed the math workbook. With a score of 690 without studying, I might just be able to pull off a 750+ if I take a few weeks to study the next time round.
