Let my speed = x kmph & the speed of the stream = y kmph (assuming uniform flow)
Effective speed during downstream = x + y & that of during upstream = x - y

Distance covered during downstream = (x + y)2 &
Distance covered during upstream = (x - y)2

Given, (x + y)2 - (x - y)2 = 16
--> 2x + 2y - 2x + 2y = 16
--> 4y = 16
--> y = 16/4 = 4 kmph
