Hi Qjones818,

When was the last time that you took a FULL-LENGTH CAT (including the Essay and IR sections)? And what were your scores on that CAT? While there are plenty of great practice materials that you can use to hone your skills, there's really no substitute to a CAT taken under test-like conditions and parameters.

Hi Rich,

I took a full-length CAT yesterday (veritas) and scored a 680 (Q46, V38.) I felt like my Q score could have been higher but I made silly mistakes, not fully comprehending questions/ going into a probability question thinking I was going to get it wrong before even attempting. (I haven't reviewed probability as thoroughly as I should have) Previously I've taken GMATPREP and scored between 710-730. Any advice in terms of increasing my accuracy on the more difficult questions? Thanks again.

Be careful about targeting a number of correct/incorrect because the test is adaptive. Your score is based off how you do in relation to the difficulty levels. What is your target score? Have you taken a GMATPrep exam? Those are the best proxy for your real GMAT performance.

Hi Kyle,

I understand the test is adaptive so getting easy questions wrong hurts your score more than difficult question, so i try to focus on accuracy rates vs. number of questions correct. That being said, my accuracy rate tends to drop substantially as I get to the 700 level questions. My target score is 730 and via GMATPrep i've gotten between 710-730 and I took a veritas yesterday and scored a 680. Still any tips in reference to increasing accuracy rates at the higher level problems?

Hi Qjones818,

I have a few questions about this last CAT that you took:

1) How many questions did you get wrong in the Quant section because of a silly/little mistake? I don't care about the "level" of the question, just the total number that fit this "category."
2) In the Verbal section, how many questions did you get wrong because you "narrowed it down to 2 choices and 'guessed' wrong?"
3) Did you have to rush to finish any section of this CAT and guess on a bunch of questions at the end?
4) Did you finish any of the sections early?

At your current scoring level, the GMAT becomes really "sensitive" to little mistakes, so to raise your score, you're going to have to work to eliminate the silly mistakes from your "process."

I agree with the recommendations about logging "silly mistakes". In fact, you should have an error log for all the mistakes you make on the practice exams and OG practice problems to see where you are lagging. Focus on the areas where you seem to get the most mistakes. Also, there will be significant variation in your practice scores, but GMATPrep exams will be the closest thing to test day.

How much focus are you putting on Verbal? You can probably get more score improvement by maximizing verbal than quant based on your scaled scores...
