I was reading an article on the nationaljournal and this was the first sentence of the article.

As Republicans criticize U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, some members of Congress are suggesting that racism and sexism may be behind the attack.

As Republicans criticize U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, - This is a dependent clause ?
some members of Congress are suggesting that racism and sexism may be behind the attack. - This is the main independant clause ?

I think the clauses are not joined correctly.
Are the verbs correctly used - 'criticize' and 'are suggesting' ?

How can the sentence be corrected?
