Hi all! I'm new here.
I've been studying for the GMAT recently because I wanted to do an MBA...my major reason for doing it is because I eventually want to be an entrepreneur.
Although many of my peers (I'm a software developer) could quit today and just become an entrepreneur, I am not in a position to do that because I am on an H1B visa with no hope of a green card (company won't apply for it, I've been working for 4 years now...). If I did an MBA I would have 1 year in OPT to do whatever I want, plus maybe the opportunity to start a business while in school. Also if that doesn't work out, it should be easier to get green card sponsorship with a master's degree.
However, I had a meeting with my friend/mentor today who told me that I shouldn't do the GMAT, because I could be an entrepreneur if I wanted anyway (how would I deal with the work authorization? Accelerators? Board of directors? Citizen co-founder? I have no idea), and because an MBA would cost me $$$ which could be better spent building my business.
I'm originally from India, where everyone is sort of obsessed with getting an MBA...however, they usually do that as a transition point to move abroad, whereas I'm already here. Furthermore, as an entrepreneur, the connections made in B-school wouldn't have the same immense value to me.
What do you guys think? Does it make sense for me to go for it?
