Imagine it is April next year. You have one admit in hand. Solid program. Not your dream school.
Would you go — confidently, without regret?
If the answer is no, your list was not balanced. It was hopeful.
A truly balanced list passes three tests:
· Your profile is competitive, not at the extreme edge
· The school can get you to your target role and geography
· You would be proud to attend
Many applicants stack only top schools and add one “safe” option they would never actually join. That creates risk: rejections everywhere or one offer you hesitate to accept.
Balance is not about getting in somewhere. It is about landing somewhere you will fully commit to.
Before finalising your list, complete this sentence for each school: “I would choose this school because __.”
If that feels forced, reconsider.
Here’s to a restful weekend after a long week of waiting. Rooting for good news in your inbox soon — see you next Friday with another thought.
