Because Grace has no listed soda preference, it logically follows that the most restricted scenarios will involve Grace going first. If Grace goes first, then Rupert must go second selecting the lemon soda. Because, Zane doesn't care who goes first as long as he can select the lemon or strawberry soda, if Grace goes first and picks the strawberry soda, then Zane won't be able to satisfy his condition of choosing either the lemon or strawberry soda. I think this is a poor-quality question and I don't agree with the explanation. I tried out this problem and I believe something is wrong here.
the question is asking (twice):
1. "Grace that would not allow each student to select a soda based on the restrictions the kids have set for themselves?"
2. "select a Selection and a Soda that would describe a scenario for Grace that would preclude all the children from selecting a soda acceptable to each of them."
Given the specific words of (1)EACH student and (2)ALL children, by choosing the 1st 'selection' for Grace we don't restrict/preclude Rupert of choosing his selection, only Zane.
We are asked to find restriction for both and we restrict only Zane here.
the question is asking (twice):
