To be very successful, the two most important qualities a person must have are being hardworking and brilliant. Both Casper and Karen are in the field of research and Karen is the more hardworking and brilliant of the two.

I don’t quite agree with the solution. since its given Casper is amongst the lot of very successful and to be very successful one must be hard working and brilliant. both are in the same field and Karen is more hard working and brilliant of the two,
Hence i don't find a reason to not include Karen in the lot of very successful???

The mistake is reversing the condition.

The passage says very successful people must be hardworking and brilliant. It does not say that every hardworking and brilliant person must be very successful.

So Karen being more hardworking and brilliant than Casper does not guarantee that Karen is very successful. It only tells us Karen has those qualities to a greater degree.
