I don’t quite agree with the solution. I think answer is wrong here mainly due to the fact that MAsters to non masters is given to be 3:5 for AI and 5:3 for Cs respectively

You are missing a point.

  • AI team: ratio 5:3, total 24 gives 15 with master’s and 9 without
  • Cybersecurity team: ratio 3:5, total 8 gives 3 with master’s and 5 without
  • Company totals: 18 with master’s and 14 without
  • Overall ratio: 9 to 7

So the correct answer is p = 9 and q = 7.

I would not call that a trap. This question is straightforward. You just apply each given ratio to the correct department, find the two totals, and then combine them. Nothing more is going on here.
