Question

Researchers conducted a controlled study to examine how different follow-up activities affected retention of the same academic material. Five groups of equal size participated. All participants were drawn from the same academic program, and the groups were balanced with respect to prior course performance, gender, and age distribution. Each group first read the same chapter of a textbook for one hour.
 
After this initial reading, four groups were assigned distinct one-hour follow-up activities:
 
• Flashcard Review: students studied a prepared set of flashcards that summarized key concepts from the chapter.
 
• Silent Re-reading: students read the chapter again quietly on their own.
 
• Video Recap: students watched a one-hour instructional video that explained and summarized the chapter.
 
• Group Discussion: students discussed the chapter in their assigned groups, using a prepared set of guiding questions.
 
A fifth group served as the control. These students read the chapter once for one hour and then took the recall quizzes without any additional activity.
 
All groups completed the recall quiz three times: immediately after their assigned study procedure, one day later, and one week later. None of the groups had any further contact with the material between the first test and the final test. The quiz scores reported for each group represent the average percentage of correct answers achieved by that group.Before the results were collected, expectations differed by testing stage:
 
•  Immediately after the study session:  Flashcard Review was expected to produce the highest scores, Group Discussion second, Video Recap third, and Silent Re-reading lowest.
 
•  One day later:  Flashcard Review was expected to remain the highest, Group Discussion second, Silent Re-reading third, and Video Recap lowest.
 
•  One week later:  Group Discussion was expected to move to the top position, Flashcard Review second, Silent Re-reading third, and Video Recap lowest.The table below reports the average percentage of correct answers on the recall quiz for each group across the three testing times.
