Id a a positive integer and if remainders of 4 and 6 are obtained when 89 and 125, respectively, are divided by a then a=?

Hi, the correct answer should be d)17.
So we write 2 equations
89-ax=4
125-ay =6
solving each equation
ax=85
ay =119
solving the two equations together
x/y =85/119
Now just plug in each of the answers that are divisible by 85 and 119 and that should be the answer.

89 = ax + 4 ......................... i
ax = 85
a = 85/x
125 = ay + 6 ....................... ii
ay = 119
a = 119/y
so 85/x = 119/y
the common divider of 89 and 119 is 17. so a = 17
