Help required with usage of Idioms (not sure if "required with" is an idiomatic expression

Can some one explain more about identifying non-idiomatic expressions?
Is there any sort of thumb rule that we can follow?
Please help me with this 'coz I have been going thru really tough time with these.

Hey Krishna,
Idioms, by definitions, are expressions used out of a common practice. They are not bound by the rules of grammer and thus there are hardly any rules of thumb.
The best way to master them is to read some good US magazines, listen to CNN and so on.
Sahil's verbal notes and Spidey's notes are excellent resources to get a basic idea about them. Also try Kaplan's Verbal workout - its a pretty good source.
