Hello,

-2<x does this include -2?

Seems it means x is greater than -2 and doesn't say equal to -2, i'd expect that the number line doesn't include -2.

Kindly clarify.

If \(-2< x<3\), which of the following CANNOT be true?

(A) \(3x<-3\)
(B) \(2x+2<4\)
(C) \(3x<8\)
(D) \(3x>-3\)
(E) \(-3x>8\)

Draw the inequality in a number line

Now check the options...

(A) x < -1
(B) x < 1
(C) x < 8/3
(D) x > -1
(E) x >< -8/3 Or, x < -2.67

Check carefullly only (E) falls outside the given range of the number line...

Since x is greater than -2, there is no way for -3x to be greater than 8.

(E) \(-3x>8\)

We need to find an answer that is completely out of the range of \(-2 < x < 3\).

(A) \(x < -1\), we could have x = -1.5 so this might be true.
(B) \(x < 1\). We could have x = 0 so this might be true.
(C) This range incorporates part of -2 < x < 3.
(D) This range incorporates part of -2 < x < 3.
(E) x < -8/3 , this is completely out of range so this is our answer. (Note we flip signs since we moved over -3)

Hi OmotayoH , we would write \(x ≥ -2\) if we want to include -2. \(x > -2\) would not include -2.

In my view option C and E are same and all of the options can be true. Pls check

Posted from my mobile device

No, here is why:

(C) 3x<8 this means \(x<\frac{8}{3}\) ; x<2.6 this is possible because from the question stem x<3 and 2.6 is less than 3.

(E) −3x>8 this means \(x<-\frac{8}{3}\) (you flip the inequality sign when you divide both side by a negative number, in this case "-3"); x<-2.6. This is cannot be true because the min. value x can have, towards the left of zero on the number line, is -2 and -2.6 is less than -2.
