X1=8, X2=32.
X1+X2=40.
Hence, E.

case 1 : 20-x=12
x=8

case 2: -(20-x)=12
-20+x=12
x=32

So the sum of the 2 possible values of x is (32+8)=40, which is option E.

Solving for x when (20 - x) is positive, we have:

20 - x = 12

8 = x

Solving for x when (20 - x) is negative, we have:

-(20 - x) = 12

-20 + x = 12

x = 32

The sum is 8 + 32 = 40.

If |20 − x| = 12, what is the sum of the two possible value of x?

Concept |x-a| = distance of x from a
Now |20 − x| = 12, it means x is at a distance of 12 from 20,
Hence x is either 8 or 32
Sum = 8+32 =40. (E)
