If 3 apples and 4 bananas costs $1.37, and 5 apples and 7 bananas costs $2.36, what is the total cost of 1 apple and 1 banana?

A. $0.38
B. $0.39
C. $0.40
D. $0.41
E. $0.42

here is my approach..

Let a be the cost of apple and b be the cost of banannas

So we have two equations

3a+4b =1.37 ------ eqn 1

5a + 7b=2.36 ----- eqn 2

Now we need the cost of 1.a+ 1b

Simply multiple eq1 by 2 and subtract 2 from this

6a+8b =2.74 eqn 1 after mutiplying by 2
5a + 7b=2.36 ----- eqn 2

Now subtract eqn 2 from new eq1

a+b=0.38

So my OA is A.

Press Kudos if it helps!!

A. $0.38

(1) 3a + 4b = 1.37
(2) 5a + 7b = 2.36

(2) - (1) : 2a + 3b = 2.36 - 1.37 = 0.99 (3)

(1) - (3) : a + b = 1.37 - 0.99 = 0.38

--> A is the answer
