Given:
3x + 7 > y
x + y > 2
Since the two inequalities are arranged so that the inequality symbols are facing the same direction, let's ADD them together.
We get:
4x + 7 + y > y + 2
Subtract y from both sides to get: 4x + 7 > 2
Subtract 7 from both sides to get: 4x > -5
Divide both sides by 4 to get: x > -5/4
Answer: C

Another approach:
Take: 3x + 7 > y
And rewrite as: y < 3x + 7
Take: x + y > 2
And rewrite as: 2 < x + y
Subtract x from both sides to get: 2 - x < y
COMBINE the inequalities to get: 2 - x < y < 3x + 7
From this, we can conclude that 2 - x < 3x + 7
Add x to both sides: 2 < 4x + 7
Subtract 7 from both sides: -5 < 4x
Divide both sides by 4 to get: -5/4 < x
Answer: C
