a^2 will either be a positive integer or be 0.

That limits the value of b.

b could be only be 6 as total is 7.

Solution

Given:
• $$a^2 + b = 7$$

To find:
• Possible value of b

Approach and Working:
• The value of $$a^2$$ is always ≥ 0, which implies, b ≤ 7

Hence, the correct answer is Option A

Possible values of a and b are -

1. a = 0 & b = 7 ; 0^2 + 7 = 7
2. a = 1 & b = 6 ; 1^2 + 6 = 7
3. a = 2 & b = 3 ; 2^2 + 3 = 7

Among the given options, only (A) fits in, thus correct Answer must be (A) 6
