(1) c = 5a and d = 5b
(2) 5a = 4b and 5c = 4d

Target question: Is a/b = c/d?

Statement 1: c = 5a and d = 5b
So, c/d = 5a/5b = a/b
Aha! c/d = a/b
So, the answer to the target question is YES, a/b = c/d
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: 5a = 4b and 5c = 4d
Take: 5a = 4b
Divide both sides by 5 to get: a = 4b/5
Divide both sides by b to get: a/b = 4/5

Now take: 5c = 4d
Divide both sides by 5 to get: c = 4d/5
Divide both sides by d to get: c/d = 4/5

Since a/b and c/d both equal 4/5, we can be certain that a/b = c/d
So, the answer to the target question is YES, a/b = c/d
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

Answer: D

Cheers,
Brent

(1) c = 5a and d = 5b
(2) 5a = 4b and 5c = 4d

Upon rearranging option 1

c/a=5 and d/b=5 => equal

Therefore c/a=d/b=> a/b=c/d.

Upon rearranging option 2

a/b=4/5 and c/d=4/5
=> a/b=c/d.

Option D.
