If apples are sold in baskets of 5, 15, and 30, and the percent of apples in 5 and 15-count baskets equals 80% of the total, and the percent of apples in 15-count and 30-count baskets also equals 80% of the total, what is the average number of apples per basket?


Please explain your answer.

150/13, same as AkamaiBrah naswer is correct. I had done some miscalc last time. It is lengthy but straight forward.

x, y and z as the number of 5, 15 and 30 orange baskets.

From what is given, (5x+15y)/(5x+15y+30z) = 80/100;

(15y+30z)/(5x+15y+30z) = 80/100;

Solve these to get x = y = 6z;

The target is (5x+15y+30z)/(x+y+z) becomes
(5*6z+15*6z+30z)/(6z+6z+z)
= 150/13

If apples are sold in baskets of 5, 15, and 30, and the percent of apples in 5 and 15-count baskets equals 80% of the total, and the percent of apples in 15-count and 30-count baskets also equals 80% of the total, what is the average number of apples per basket?

Using numbers may be easier..

say 100 is the total number of apples

Count5 - 20
Coutnt15 - 60
Count30 -20

Average = 100/(20/5+60/15+20/30) = 150/13
