If the number of pencils bought by Kelly is x then Brian bought 4x pencils.

Total no. of pencils bought is 5x. Only one option is divisible by 5 which is 15.

The correct answer is C

Did you add x to 4x? I'm a bit confused by that bit

Brian bought four times as many pencils as Kelly

Let x = the number of pencils that Kelly bought
So 4x = the number of pencils that Kelly bought

TOTAL number of pencils purchased = (number of pencils that Kelly bought) + (number of pencils that Brian bought)
= x + 4x
= 5x

So, the TOTAL number of pencils purchased equals 5x
This means the TOTAL number of pencils purchased must be divisible by 5

Check the answer choices......
Only answer choice C is divisible by 5

Answer: C

Cheers,
Brent
