Let original money be J, A and F
Now after first transaction
J-5, A+5, F
After second transaction
J-5, A+3, F+2, now all these three are equal. We have to find J-A
j-5 = a+3
j-a = 5+3= 8

Given: If Jake gives Alex $5.00 and Alex gives Fiona $2.00, the three children will have the same amount of money.

Asked: How much more money does Jake have than Alex?

Let Jake(J) , Alex(A) & Fiona(F) has money J, A & F respectively

Jake gives Alex $5.00
J-$5, A+$5

Alex gives Fiona $2.00
A+5-2, F+2
A+$3, F+$2

The three children will have the same amount of money.
J-5=A+3=F+2
J-A=5+3=$8

Solved another way, let the amount of money Jones has be $10. If Jones gives Alex $5, and Alex had to give $2 to Fiona in order for them to have the same amount of $5, then it means that Alex originally had $2 while Fiona had $3.
The difference between amount of money Jones have and that of Alex is 10-2=$8.

The answer is therefore E.
