Given:
\(3p + q = 12\)
\(p + 2q =14\)
Our goal is to eliminate the variable \(q\) so that we are left with an equation with the variable \(p\) only...
Take the top equation and multiply both sides by \(2\) to get:
\(6p + 2q = 24\)
\(p + 2q =14\)
Subtract the bottom equation from the top equation to get: \((6p + 2q) - (p + 2q) = 24 - 14\)
Simplify: \(5p = 10\)
Solve: \(p = 2\)
Answer: D
