Re: If p is a positive integer, what is p? 1) p/4 is a prime 2) [#permalink]
I just realized that I said 6/4 = 2. Wow. Sorry guys - off to drink more coffee!! I am clearly not awake yet. Been up studying too much - my test is tomorrow...

C.
(1) p can be 8 or 12
(2) p can be 9 or 6
Together,
p=4*prime
If p is divisible by 3, this means 4*prime must be divisible by 3.
This also means prime cannot be anything else but 3.

statement I

p/4 is a prime

28/4 = 7 or 44/4 = 11

insufficient

statement II

p is divisible by 3

12/3 = 4 or 6/3 = 2

insufficient

both statements

4*2 = 8
4*3 = 12
4*5 = 20

and so on ...

as you can see, apart from 12 ---> 4*(prime number) ---> cannot divide by three.

the answer is (C)

:)

great explanation, killersquirrel! :)

This is C.

S1: p/4 is prime. Just multiply 4 by any prime then divide by 4. We have an infininte amount of primes.

4*2=8
4*3=12
4*5=20
4*7=28

etc...

Insuff.

S2: 3,6,9,12,15, etc... are all divisible by 3. Insuff.

1&2:

b/c 4*p is only divisible by 4 and the prime number, we can only have 12 as the number.

Try all the primes you want. 4*p will not be disible by 3 unless p itself is 3. 3 is prime.

Suff.
