St1: The first term of S is –40.
Not sufficient. There is no way to know what the 192nd term would be.
St2: Each term of S after the first term is 3 less than the preceding term.
Not sufficient. This statement does not tell us what the first term is.
St1 + St2: Sufficient.
The terms are like this: -40, -43, -46, -49....
This is an AP with first term as -40 and common difference as -3. We can calculate the 192nd term. There is no need to calculate but for academic purpose, the formula for nth term of an AP is = a1 + (n-1)d. So the 192nd term is = (-40) + (192-1)*(-3) = -613.
Answer (C).

Combining the 2 statements makes it an AP problem
