width = w
Length = 5w
Perimeter = w+5w+w+5w = 36
12w=36
w=3

Let w = the width of the garden, and so 5x = the length of the garden. Using the perimeter formula: P = 2L + 2W, we can create the equation:

2(5w) + 2w = 36

12w = 36

w = 3
