If x = 1- 3t and y = 2t - 1, then for what value of t does x = y?

(A) 5/2
(B) 3/2
(C) 2/3
(D) 2/5
(E) 0

We are given expressing of x and y in terms of t.
Making both of these equal as x = y

1-3t=2t-1
=> 2 = 5t
=> t = 1/5

Hence D

SOLUTION

If x = 1- 3t and y = 2t - 1, then for what value of t does x = y?

(A) 5/2
(B) 3/2
(C) 2/3
(D) 2/5
(E) 0

Since \(x = y\), then \(1- 3t= 2t - 1\) --> \(5t=2\) --> \(t=\frac{2}{5}\).

Answer: D.

Kudos points given to everyone with correct solution. Let me know if I missed someone.

since you are asked to solve for the value at which x = y , set the equations equal to each other and solve.

Your answer should be 2/5, you can plug it back into the original equations to double check if you're not certain.

(A) 5/2
(B) 3/2
(C) 2/3
(D) 2/5
(E) 0

We are given x = 1 – 3t and y = 2t – 1, and we need to determine the value for t when x = y. We should notice that both x and y are already in terms of t. Thus, we can substitute 1 – 3t for x and 2t – 1 for y in the equation x = y. This gives us:

1 – 3t = 2t – 1

2 = 5t

2/5 = t

The answer is D.
