Given: x and y are integers
Find: The value of x + y
Statement 1
: \(x^2 + y^2 = 10\)- • In this case, multiple scenarios are possible:
- • \(1^2 + 3^2 = 10\) OR
• \((-1)^2 + (-3)^2 = 10\)
- o In both these cases, the value of x + y will be different.
Statement 2
: \(x*y = 3\)- • In this case also, we can have two values of x + y:
- o \(1 * 3 = 3\)
- \(x + y = 1 + 3 = 4\)
- o \((-1) * (-3) = 3\)
- \(x + y = (-1) + (-3) = -4\)
Combining both statements:
Statement 1: \(x + y = 4\) or \(– 4\)
Statement 2: \(x + y = 4\) or\( -4\)
So, even after combining both statements, we wont be able to find a unique value of x + y and the correct answer is Option E.
