If x and y are positive integers and x = 3y, what is the value of x ?

(1) y < 10
(2) x < 5

I thought the answer was B b/c x and y are both positive and it's only when x = 3 it makes sense. The answer was C though. Could anyone please explain? Thanks!

Given x and y are positive integer.
x = 3y that is x is multiple of 3

First statement says y< 10 that means it can take value from 1 to 9. so the value of x will be 3 to 27 which is not unique ,hence not sufficient

From Second statement x < 5 that means x can take value from 1 to 4 and from the question stem we know that x is the multiple of 3 and x and y both are positive integer so from this range only
x = 3 will satisfy the given condition, hence b is sufficient

Correct choice should be B

Thank you so much!
The original answer shows >>>Now, evaluate Statement (2). Statement (2) provides that x < 5, and the question provides that x is a positive integer, so x could equal 1, 2, 3, or 4. When different numbers that satisfy a statement yield different answers to the question, the statement is insufficient. Eliminate choice B.

I was like,,,, "???? is y not supposed to be integer as well??" ...

1) y < 10

For every value of y we have a value of x
Multiple values so not sufficient

(2) x < 5
For y as integer only x=3 qualifies others not
B is sufficient And is answer

Give kudos if it helps

Statement 2 is sufficient because x=3 is the only possibility is x < 5 to be a multiple of 3 i.e. y = 1.

Correct Answer is B
