The only way of getting 85 by adding two squares of integers is to have x=9 and y=2 (or x=2 and y=9). So x^2-y^2 = 81-4=77 or x^2-y^2=4-81 = -77. There is a mistake in the question.

9 & 2 is one possible combination. The other is 7 & 6.

\(7^2 + 6^2 = 85\)

\(9^2 + 2^2 = 85\)

This problem is flawed and should be either removed from the forum (or the answer choices need to be changed.) Because the question limits x and y to be "positive integers," the possible correct answers to the question are very limited. x^2 - y^2 could be 77, -77, 13, or -13. None of those are answer choices. And none of the other answer choices work.
