If X and Y are positive integers, what is the ratio between Y and X?
(1) XY = 150.
(2) Y is 22% of X.
Let's reword the target question slightly...
Target question: What is the ratio Y/X? Statement 1: XY = 150 This statement doesn't
FEEL sufficient, so I'll TEST some values.
There are several values of X and X that satisfy statement 1. Here are two:
Case a: X = 150 and Y = 1, in which case
Y/X = 1/150Case b: X = 30 and Y = 5, in which case
Y/X = 5/30Since we cannot answer the
target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Aside: For more on this idea of plugging in values when a statement doesn't feel sufficient, you can read my article: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/articles/dat ... lug-values Statement 2: Y is 22% of X In other words, Y = 0.22X
We can write this as Y = (22/100)X
Divide both sides by X to get:
Y/X = 22/100Since we can answer the
target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
