If x is negative, is x 9
(2) x^3 < -9

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

If x^2 > 9, then |x| > 3. So as long as x is negative, then x < -3. Statement 1 is sufficient

If x^3 < -9, then x < -2.08, but not necessarily < -3 - i.e. x could be either -2.5 or -4. So statement 2 is insufficient. Therefore, (A) is the answer.
