If xy ≠ 0, what is the ratio of x to y?

(1) 3x = 4y

(2) x = 4
stem: x/y?
1)
3x=4y => x/y=4/3
sufficient
2)
x=4, y value not known
insufficient

If xy ≠ 0, what is the ratio of x to y?

we have to find x/y

(1) 3x = 4y

(2) x = 4

Statement 1:
3x = 4y

which gives X/Y= 4/3
hence statement 1 is sufficient

In statement 2:
x=4 but no value for y given hence insufficient

xy ≠ 0; this means x and y are non-zero values.

From statement I alone, 3x = 4y.
Therefore, \(\frac{x }{ y}\) = \(\frac{4 }{ 3}\). Statement I alone is sufficient to say that the ratio of x to y is 4 to 3.
Answer options B, C and E can be eliminated. Possible answer options are A or D.

From statement II alone, x = 4.
Since we do not have any information about y, we cannot find the ratio of x to y.
Statement II alone is insufficient. Answer option D can be eliminated.

The correct answer option is A.

Hope that helps!
