I'm going to a school that's not in the top 20, and i'm not worried about it.

To whether or not its worth pursuing, the value will be dependant on your position now and the position you desire. How much $$ you're making, and if you're happy.
The value will be significantly different for someone making $45K/year to someone making $85K a year pre-mba.

Also, I'm doing this for the experience as much as anything. Maybe it'll open doors, maybe not. Maybe I have to work very hard for those doors to open. Maybe the job market will be horrible, and I won't get anything. Lot of possibilities. I feel it will be a rewarding experience no matter what happens. I'm excited.

By the way, I didn't apply to any top 10 schools, 1 top 20 - UNC - waitlisted then dinged.

Same is the case with me!! I will, in all probability, go to a school ranked in the 20-30 league, although the school his highly ranked when it comes to my desired speciality. I know for certain that even if i get a decent job post mba, my post-mba salary will be atleast 6-8 times my pre-mba salary. Count in the fact that i'm a getting a very good scholarship that almost nils out my financial burden.

I know it is going to be extremely challenging for me to get a career but that only means that you'll be extracting more out of your MBA. Its one thing to have recruited by top guys on campus and its also another thing to reach out to them and network with them to get your job. Either way, it should be rewarding for any candidate to be fortunate to undergo these processes.

Just my 2 c!! Such a case might not hold true for everyone, especially if you've to invest lots time /effort/ money only to find urself sitting in a pathetic job :-D

Can we tweak that poll question to include the top 30? If not, my answer is "yes." If so, my reply would be "no." A degree from an under top 30, (especially top 50 program) really won't catapault one's career significantly, unless you're an old fogey like myself looking to start your own business. Uuuuhhh, my back!

That's the One million Pounds question

I saw here (I think it was rhyme who wrote) that the real ranking is:
1) The one I got accepted
2) The other one I'm in
3) The WLs
4) the others
...
...
100) one that dinged me...

It was that or something very similar to that.[/quote]

London Business School just became 100th in my ranking....

No, I wouldn't. I don't think it would be worth the money, time and effort to do so. I don't think it would open any real doors or create the high powered network I would seek.

I see a lot of resumes from people with MBAs from no-name schools, and they are interviewing for positions more junior than my own. They also don't seem to bring anything especially impressive to the table when it comes to analytics, and my firm pays no premium whatsoever to these candidates. Their MBA is an irrelevant blip on their resume - often listed at the bottom, and we don't even consider it a factor when making a decision.

Things may be different elsewhere - maybe its just my firm - so I could be wrong - but from what I've seen, these people have no more leverage, negotiating power, better prospects or salaries than those with no MBA.

Let me jut go ahead and apologize to whoever this offends. Like I said, I may be wrong - this is just been my exposure and experience.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider "no-name schools"?

He can't list em cause they have no names.

Seriously, this post lacks "scholarship" options. I won't go to non-elite for my own cash, but it's quite possible for them to buy me out. :)

I honestly can't even remember them. They are schools I've never heard of. If you want i can go find the resumes and see what they were.

Pls go ahead. As I get the remaining dings from my apps I will be able to find consolation in the phrase "at least I didn't pay full tuition at _______ school".

Nah, I just wanted to know whether you considered schools 25-50 "no name schools". Some do (read: rockman).

Totally depends on where you're at now and what your goals are. Some people truly believe that the only way they can achieve their goals is by going to a top 5 or even H/S/W. There certainly may be some truth in that depending on what that particular goal may be, but I believe many tend to downplay the opportunities at trans elites, near elites, and near elite frontiers.

Furthermore, many of the mid-range schools have niches that are very competitive with their higher-ranked counterparts that can offset the difference in rankings. For instance, I have a handful of friends that are 1st or 2nd years at a couple trans and near elites, and every single one of them have landed the type of IB or Consulting gig they were aiming for pre-business school. The strong economy certainly plays a role in this, but who's to say the economy won't continue to be strong in 08/09?

In short, my answer is yes.

I think H/S/W are in a seperate orbit alltogether.
They have risen above the ranking rat race

Even if they were ranked 100/101 and 102 there woould be a majority who would prefer to join them rather than the actual top ranked ones.

The rankings are for the next tier of schools like chic/columbia/kellog onwards.

I'm the one who still love to go to Wharton even its rank is 500!!

I'll try to find them, but I throw most of these things away as they clutter my desk. I'm talking about places outside of the top 30 - things like wake forest. Maybe one or two of them is in the top 50. I dont know. The vast majority of them I never heard of before the resume.
