I will be reapplying and since the schools are not giving any feedback, the only option left is to improve all aspects of your application. here is what i am planning to do:
1. Retake the GMAT. I do not have a bad score, but i need to take it out of the equation. So, the idea is to gauge your competition and make sure you definitely do not come short in aspects that you can control. GMAT being one of them.
2. Change jobs. Get into a big brand company even if the job description remains the same. I am specifically thinking of somehow getting into the kind of job i want to do post MBA, even if it means taking a pay hit. The idea is to use 4-6 months of work experience in that new job to identify areas where you had trouble working or found difficult to come to terms to and weave it in the Why MBA, why this school part
3. If you have a weak GPA, take some additional classes.
4. Focus on community involvement. This does not mean that you try and do 10 different things. Pick the one thing that you really love or that you have been kind of doing and try and take it to the next level. Take some leadership in this and make sure that by the time you are applying, this activity gives you almost as much to talk about as your professional work.
5. Essays are important. and so are recommendations. People have suggested some good ideas on how to work on those. In my case, my essays suffered a little bit from poor research and / or i could not put enough stuff about schools because i was running out of space (this can be attributed to inefficient writing maybe ?). By the time i was interviewing i had tons of more material about the schools to talk about. But i guess by that time, the damage had already been done.
6. Interviews: I spoke to some alumni about the interviews and their suggestion was very pointed. All the applicants to B-School are really really sharp. So you too need to come across as someone who is sharp and polished. Be enthusiastic about everything you say about the school and yourself. Show depth and maturity in your answers. Saying that i want to go to Chicago because of the many noble laureates will do no good. You must answer in such a way that the need for you to study from a noble laureate becomes apparent and logical even necessary.
I think that at least in theory i am starting to get a bit of a hang of it. How well i translate these to my own candidature is something i will know by the end of this year.
