Hello,
If I am applying to a Master's in Finance, and I am asked:
If you had to choose an entirely different career path, what would it be and why? How can I respond to this question? What are some points that the interviewer would like to hear?
Also, as someone who had transferred to finance from architecture during his undergrad, should I allude that I would have continued my bachelor's in architecture? Or is that something that I should avoid?
Furthermore, if I am asked about the reasons for switching majors, what are some good reasons that I can provide?
Thank you all in advance.
danymasri98 we have seen similar questions in MBA applications too.
In my opinion, this is not aimed at questioning your passion or motivation for the program you are applying for, but rather to explore the values that drive your motivations and actions. Even if someone were to take a completely different career path, they would be looking for the very values that drive them. I can give you an example: An applicant pursuing an MBA after a degree in fashion design has a long-term motivation to revitalize the dwindling artisanal and manufacturing economy in his home region due to inadequate infrastructure, lack of digital penetration and broken market linkages. In his essay on an alternative career, he writes that he would have liked to become a bureaucrat with the power to drive change at the grassroots level and empower small manufacturers. As you can see, the values that drive his decisions are not very different in both cases.
Alternatively, you could answer this question by saying that you want to pursue a career that may not make you a lot of money, but one that gives you great satisfaction or happiness - this could be a sport or a job that doesn't necessarily pay a lot.
Confused what might be the best strategy for your B school applications. Reach out.
Best wishes
