Introduction

The objective of the Doctoral Programme in Management is to equip students with necessary skills to identify and carry out research on complex issues in a specialized field of management. The programme is strongly committed to preparing thought leaders, both for the academic and corporate world. Graduates of the Doctoral Programme in Management are placed in world class organizations in teaching, research and consulting positions. A total of 513 doctoral students have graduated from IIMA so far.

The Doctoral Programme in Management seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contributions that advance the frontiers of knowledge. It provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research. The student opts for one of  eleven functional/sectoral  areas and acquires super specialized theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical aspects of the area.

The small class size allows close interaction with faculty members, who provide the intellectual stimulus and help develop the student's research interests and professional goals. Students generally spend a little over  four years  to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.

Course work in the  first year  provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the  second year , students take advanced Doctoral courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization.

The Ph.D. thesis for the  next couple of years , provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Doctoral Programme in Management receive a comprehensive fellowship that  covers all costs  and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

Overview 
The Doctoral Programme in Management (leading to a Ph.D.) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) welcomes candidates with a solid academic foundation, a high level of motivation, and the intellectual curiosity to conduct innovative research. IIMA’s curriculum prepares doctoral students for careers in academia and industrial research.

 Economics 
The Economics Area of IIMA is a vibrant centre of research and teaching on diverse topics spanning the worlds of theory and practice using cutting-edge research methods. It has had a distinguished history with a former faculty member (C Rangarajan) serving as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and faculty being involved in monetary policy and advisory committees. Several former PGP/MBA students from IIMA have gone on to make important contributions in the world of Economics, such as Sanjeev Goyal, Raghuram Rajan, and Arvind Subramanian. In recent years, the Area has grown in strength to study and teach more fields outside its traditional focus on macroeconomics, including subjects rarely covered in India such as behavioural economics, economics of networks and economic history.

Finance & Accounting 
The Finance & Accounting area has a multi-disciplinary orientation. Faculty in the area have served on government committees and contributed significantly to several policy-making issues. They have also been involved in providing consultancy services to corporate and governmental organizations. The courses and research interests of the area focus on financial management, management accounting and control, the Indian capital and money market, banking, earnings management, corporate governance, privatization and international finance.

Food and Agribusiness  
To facilitate cutting-edge research in applied, policy and research issues related to the management of agriculture including food, agribusiness, the rural and allied sector for stakeholders across the public, private, voluntary and cooperative domain.

Human Resources Management (HRM) 
The Human Resources Management area comprises faculty members having interests in HRM, employee/industrial relations, labor economics, human behavior and industrial sociology. Current research interests of the faculty include -- philosophical foundations of HRM, strategic human resource management, international and cross cultural HR, performance management and high performing work organizations, work climates, compensation and rewards, employee empowerment, employee engagement, negotiations in business, and alternate dispute resolution, human resource information systems, public personnel management, people management in services, employment relations, business turnaround, organizational transformation, ethics in business, and corporate social responsibility.

Information Systems (IS) 
The Information Systems (IS) was set up to respond to the need for research in computer applications in management. Starting in an environment that was largely unaware of the potential benefits of computerization (in the 1970s); IS has worked at Identifying potential applications for various levels of management; and Planning and implementing these applications.

Over the years, the group has worked with a variety of organizations, including those in government, public and private sectors. While, the group's general focus has always been on management information systems, the specific themes of its work vary depending on the changing scenario in management and information technology. The group has done research in in decision support systems, expert systems, computer aided instruction, management information systems, algorithm design, developmental informatics, software export, design of computer and network configurations, IT policy issues at international, national, state, and corporate levels, distributed computing systems including peer-to-peer systems and ad-hoc networks.

Innovation and Management in Education 
The Ravi J. Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation (RJMCEI) was formally established in 1991. It is named after Professor Ravi J. Matthai (1927-1984), the first full-time Director of IIMA, who was deeply interested in rural education. From an initial focus on institution building and higher education, the mandate of the RJMCEI has gradually expanded to include primary education, literacy and secondary education. The Centre has a robust research agenda built around innovations in education and innovative approaches to countering problems in education.

Marketing 
Marketing Area delivers marketing concept, theories, principles and content to PGP, PGPX , and FPM & FDP programmes. In addition, marketing area offers many management development programs and customized in-company training programs are all designed to help managers across the nation to appreciate the pivotal role that marketing plays in the success of an organization. Aside from delivering content geared towards customer orientation and customer satisfaction; marketing area at IIMA aims to develop innovative solutions to customer problems and continued improvement process on how to stay ahead of competition through customer orientation. All the marketing sessions and programs are intended to offer our students with the skills, tools, concepts, and practices that they may require to be customer-oriented business leaders, while being thoughtful and ethical.

Operations and Decision Sciences (O&DS) 
The Operations and Decision Sciences (O&DS) area engages in interdisciplinary research, teaching and consulting relating to scientific methodologies in Operations Management, Operations Research and Statistics. The goal is to design, influence and enable good management practices and strengthen policies by providing the necessary strategic thinking, tools and techniques for evidence-based decision-making towards improving organizational performance in an increasingly data intensive world.

Faculty research interests in operations management are on strategic or operational issues related to manufacturing and service planning, supply chain coordination, shop floor scheduling and improving productivity of plant operations, design of operations, technological change and innovation, R&D capabilities, economics of flexible operations and process planning and in the area of Public sector and socially responsible operations.

About Organisational Behaviour (OB) Area 
The Organisational Behaviour (OB) area is internationally recognized for its teaching and research. Faculty members in the area have diverse research interests which include individual and interpersonal effectiveness, job involvement, gender issues at the workplace, work attitude, organisational excellence, human resources development, managerial culture and values, organisational dynamics and design, organisational learning, management of change and strategic organisations.

If students have an interest to apply their knowledge in their basic discipline such as psychology or sociology to the organisational context, research in OB will allow them to do so. It is not necessary for candidates to have an MBA degree, or a degree in psychology or sociology, to do a Ph.D. in the area. Rather, students from diverse disciplines are encouraged to apply for the doctoral programme in OB. Past OB Area doctoral students have been placed in prestigious institutes like IIMs, IITs, and other management schools within the country

Public Systems Group (PSG) 
Set up in October 1975, the Public Systems Group (PSG) at IIMA is an interdisciplinary group with a focus on the generation and dissemination of knowledge concerning the public sphere, the performance and management of public systems, the formulation and implementation of public policies, their societal determinants as well as consequences.

The group has its origins in specific sector oriented units like Population Studies Unit and Education Systems Unit that were later incorporated in PSG. Today the broad objectives of the PSG can be described as:

-Helping the institute play a responsive and anticipatory role in the areas of public systems and public policy;
-Promoting research that will further our understanding of effective management of public systems and democratic policy making; and
-Providing opportunities to managers and administrators for developing managerial skills and attitudes for effective management of public systems.

Strategy 
The area's primary focus is on organizational strategy and the functions of the chief executive. Research and consulting have been undertaken in such areas as managerial communication, management and analysis of competitive forces in industries, business growth and diversification, turnaround strategies, technology transfer, trans-national investments, management of public enterprises, women studies, small enterprises and entrepreneurship. The area plans to undertake major research on the impact of changes in economic policies on corporate ventures.

Entrepreneurship 
Entrepreneurship provides the basic nurturing ground in the process of wealth creation. It has emerged as a separate field in management, taking its roots from disciplines such as Economics, Psychology, Sociology and basic management principles.

The objectives of this course are:

1. to provide a comprehensive understanding of the basic concepts of entrepreneurship.
2. to review and understand the important streams of research in entrepreneurship.
3. to familiarize students with research methodologies.

Strategic Management 
This course conveys the concept of strategy and its usefulness by exposing students to a variety of organizational situations. It enables students to look at organizations in their totality and appreciate the inter-relationship among different functions.

The course helps students understand the strategy of organizations and thereby enables them to

(1) make or assist in the making of major decisions.
(2) formulate functional policies.
(3) participate in the implementation of corporate strategy.

Students spend  an average of four to five years  in the programme, which includes two years of intensive coursework. Beginning with the first term, students take advanced doctoral level courses as well as select courses from other post graduate programmes that provide a comprehensive overview of management disciplines and help develop fundamental skills for analysing managerial issues. After completing the coursework, students are required to clear a Comprehensive Examination to demonstrate that they have attained a high level of expertise in their specialization. Students then work on their doctoral theses under the supervision of their Thesis Advisory Committees. IIMA’s doctoral theses make original contributions to management scholarship and practice.

Students admitted to IIMA’s Doctoral Programme in Management get  comprehensive financial assistance  that includes tuition expenses.
 
IIMA has excellent computing facilities, library, and faculty resources. IIMA faculty members actively publish in scholarly journals and advise businesses and governments in India and abroad. Case writing and related research are actively pursued by faculty members and students.
 
IIMA’s Doctoral Programme in Management places its graduates in teaching, research, and consulting roles with world class organizations. A total of 513 doctoral students have graduated from the doctoral programme so far.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying to the Doctoral Programme in Management at IIMA must possess:

A Master’s Degree or Two-year Post Graduate Diploma (obtained after completing a Bachelor’s degree with 55% marks or equivalent) or a 5-year Integrated Master's Degree (obtained after completing higher secondary school in the 10+2 pattern) in any field with 55% marks or equivalent.
(OR)

A professional qualification – CA, CS, CMA (with a minimum of 50% marks) in addition to a Bachelor’s degree (with at least 55% marks or equivalent).

(OR)

A four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 65% marks or equivalent.

Note:  In case a candidate is awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the equivalence would be based on the equivalence certified by the institution/university from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the institution/university does not have any scheme for converting the CGPA into equivalent marks (or percentages), the equivalence would be established by IIMA by dividing the obtained CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result by 100.

If a candidate belongs to the following reserved categories – Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disabilities (PwD)/Non-creamy Other Backward Classes (NC-OBC)/Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), the minimum degree marks requirement for eligibility as part of the basic eligibility criteria given above will be relaxed by 5 percentage points.

Note that the Bachelor's/Master's degree or equivalent qualification should be from any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956; or be recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India; or possess an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE.

Candidates in their last year of a Master's/Bachelor's programme that would qualify them to apply may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will only be allowed to join the programme provisionally if they submit a certificate latest by May 31 from the Principal/Head of the Department/Registrar or Director of the university/institute (issued on or before May 31, 2027) stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical examinations) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Master's/Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification. Their admission will be confirmed when they submit mark sheets and a certificate of having completed the Master's/Bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification referred in the certificate issued by the Principal/Registrar of their college/institution. The deadline for the submission of Marksheet and Certificate is December 31. Non-fulfillment of previously mentioned basic eligibility criteria at the end of their Master’s/Bachelor’s programme will automatically result in the cancellation of their provisional admission.

Selection Process

Candidates applying to the Doctoral Programme in Management are required to take the  Common Admission Test (CAT) or a standard test in lieu of CAT  (see table below).

For NRIs and foreign candidates, the standard test is the  Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT).

Different doctoral specializations have different standard tests that candidates can take in lieu of the CAT. These standard tests are given in the following table. Candidates applying to one or more doctoral specializations should refer to the following table at the time of application.

The validity of the CAT and the other standard test scores are given in the following table. Note that the scores should be valid on the deadline for submission of the application form.

Note:  Online GMAT/GRE (take-home) exam scores are not valid. Only test center-based GMAT/GRE scores are valid.

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the CAT or the standard test in lieu of the CAT, academic background, experience, etc. IIMA may conduct online or face-to-face interviews depending upon the health advisory issued by the authorities at that time. The admission interviews are expected to be held during March-April.

Government of India guidelines for reservation are followed during admissions.

Financial Assistance (w.e.f. June 1, 2026)

IIMA provides comprehensive financial assistance that covers all academic expenses including tuition, computer, library, medical insurance, placement and alumni fees, and in addition includes a monthly subsistence allowance.
The details of monthly subsistence allowance are as follows:
    First & Second Year  of Coursework; Up to clearance of Area Comprehensive Examination (ACE) 
  Rs.48,000/-

After successful clearance of Area Comprehensive Exam (ACE) 
  Rs.52,000/-

After successful defense and submission of the thesis proposal;  up to end of Fifth Year  or thesis defense, whichever is earlier 
  Rs.58,000/-

Doctoral students are also eligible for the following research support (subject to IIMA’s policies):

Contingency allowance of Rs. 35,000/- per year (for up to five years) to cover various expenses related to academic/professional development, research, books and other materials etc. 
 Reimbursement of qualifying expenses up to Rs. 5,75,000/- for presenting research papers at international or domestic conferences (or equivalent). 
 Reimbursement of qualifying expenses related to fieldwork and other data collection up to Rs. 2,00,000/-. 
 Start-up grant of Rs. 1,00,000/- for purchasing computing equipment. 
 Financial awards for publishing papers in specified high-quality peer-reviewed journals. 
 Scope for stipend enhancement for advanced doctoral candidates in accordance with specified norms.

The Doctoral Programme in Management is a full-time programme that requires significant on-campus/local living. On-campus accommodations for single students for the initial part of their tenure, and limited housing on campus for married students are available. House rent allowance of Rs. 18,000/- per month (Rs. 24,000/- per month for students with family) is paid to qualifying students who opt to stay off-campus in Ahmedabad. This option is available to students after passing their comprehensive examination and up to the end of their fifth year.

How to Apply

The Online Application Form and Brochure will be made available on the Institute website. Candidates may submit applications for a  maximum of two doctoral specializations  using the online application form.

An application fee of Rs. 500/- (Rs. 250/- for reserved category candidates) can be paid through IIMA’s payment gateway. The last date for submitting the application is  January 31, 2026 till 5:00 pm (IST)
