Importance of IR in Indian B-School admission

Question

Hello.

I scored 700 on my GMAT (Q-46, V-40) today . I scored 3 (17 percentile) in IR and I am a bit worried if it will affect my admissions.

I am targeting  IIM A, B, C, ISB, and maybe SP Jain (last choice).
 
Although I am a bit disappointed with my GMAT score also since I scored better in the mocks, t  the low score of IR is bugging me .

Will my IR score affect my admissions? Should I retake the GMAT for a better score?

If you are confident you can get a better score than 700 (Gratz by the way!) and it may help you, the question may be why not give it another go.

I would suggest a retake - not just for IR but more so for Quant. A Q46 is about 50 percentile and the average Quant score in the Indian demography would be higher. Though your V40 is great, a below average Quant score may not be appreciated. Bring up the Quant to average and you would have no red flags in terms of the GMAT score.

The direct impact of IR and AWA scores on your admission is pretty low. In fact, some schools don’t even look at your IR and AWA scores till the point you meet a bare minimum. It is recommend scoring a minimum of 5 on IR and 4 on AWA. For Quant focused courses, I would recommend 6+ on IR.

 “Well, if 2 students are identical in all aspects (which rarely is the case), then probably IR score can be a differentiator” 
 
  “If someone’s Quant score is slightly less, then we might consider a high IR score as a good sign” 
  
I’m sure from the above quotes you can understand the importance given to IR by Adcoms.  Thus, maintaining a good score is always suggested. If in doubt, feel free write to your target school to understand if they have any specific requirements.

In your case, since your Quant score is below Q50, you may consider going for a retake for better chances and avoiding any odds.

ISB clearly mentions:  The Integrated Reasoning (IR) scores will  not  be considered for your application evaluation .

However, a Google search did not reveal any similar definitive information about the policy that IIMs have, vis-a-vis IR. You might want to write to them individually, to see if you they respond.

Hi Arka1993,

Assuming your overall GMAT score of 700 is higher than the averages at your desired schools, I don't think you need to worry too much about your IR score. That said, if you think you could raise both your overall score and IR score with a retake, then you have nothing to lose by giving the GMAT another shot.
